Track Day November 8-9th, 2009 - Sunday & Monday from 7am – 5pm Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch ********************************************************************* Gas, Lunch and Dinner: From the racetrack turn right and go 1 mile into Pahrump to the first light. A Shell gas station is on the corner. Continue a few more miles and on the left is a Rebel gas station with racing fuel. (Although gas is available at the track, it is expensive.) For lunch or dinner you may wish to turn right at that light by the Shell station onto Winery road to go to Symphony's, a 4 star restaurant located at the Pahrump Winery 1 mile on the left. A tour of the Pahrump Valley Winery and wine tasting is available for those who desire, and reservations are suggested for lunch or dinner. Lunch is available at the track, but you may want something nicer. No drinking please until after your last driving session! You should arrive at the track by 6:00am to unload your car, register, use the restrooms, and pass tech inspection. Everyone participating as a ‘driver’ will be required to attend the 7:00am Mandatory Drivers Briefing, and the Classroom Session at 7:30am. Please be prompt to the meeting, classroom and each driving session. You must learn all of our rules, flags, passing zones and other information in advance of the Driver's Meeting. The Meeting will only be a quick review of the rules. We will take questions at the meeting, but we will not be teaching the basics of what you should already know. Please print out, complete, study, bring with you, and learn everything now: The first WCL driver group session onto the track at 8:50am will be a tour of the track for Advanced (Red Group) Drivers with a Driving Instructor in the passenger seat to demonstrate ‘the line’ on all 10 turns of the 2.2 mile course. There may also be some Instructors driving their own cars, and some of these Instructors will be giving rides to their Beginner/Intermediate (Green Group) students. All drivers will have an Instructor with them in the passenger seat for all Red and Green group sessions until the Instructor ‘signs-off’ each driver to solo by signing their logbook. Your Instructor will also sign your red or green windshield sticker enabling you to solo when he or she feels confident that you are able to safely navigate the racetrack on your own. No passengers are allowed in cars unless one of them is an Instructor, except during the 12:35pm Parade Laps. If you feel you are very experienced and competent enough to give rides, please consult with your Instructor who may then ask the Chief Instructor for special permission in your case. Obey the Driving Instructor at all times. You may request a different Instructor for subsequent run group sessions allowing you to learn different techniques. You may also request an Instructor later in the day after you have been signed off to solo. If your Instructor asks to drive your car to demonstrate, you may decline. Instead ask them to give you a ride in the Instructor's car. Safety is our primary concern. Snell Approved (SA) 2000 or better helmet is required. Motorcycle (M) helmets are not acceptable as they are constructed differently and are not fireproof. Rental helmets are available for $20 per day. Clothing should be at a minimum natural fiber (not synthetic fiber) long sleeves, long pants, lightweight closed toe shoes, and driving gloves. SFI rated fire retardant multilayer Nomex or better driving suit, driving gloves and driving shoes are preferred. Neck restraints are recommended. HANS devices are preferred. Fire extinguishers are strongly recommended mounted with metal brackets to the car. Plastic mounted extinguishers are not permitted. All windows must be in the down position. Convertibles must have rollbars or integrated rollover protection. OEM seatbelts must be in good condition, and 5 or 6 point shoulder harnesses are preferred. ‘Advanced’ Group Drivers are those with current competition licenses and those that have attended at least 3 track events per year over the past 3 years. ‘Intermediate’ Group Drivers are all others including first-timers. Driving Instructors will direct you to change groups as they deem appropriate. If you wish to change groups to move up to the faster group or down to the slower group, please ask permission of a Driving Instructor who will then have the Staging Area Official give you the appropriate sticker. If you are sharing a car with another driver and you are both Intermediate Drivers, you must alternate every other Intermediate Group Session. If you are sharing a car with an Advanced Driver, you may alternate between the Advanced and Intermediate Groups. The Parade Laps scheduled for 12:35pm are a slow speed lead-follow drive around the racetrack for Drivers and Spectators alike. Passengers are allowed, helmets are not required, and no passing is allowed. High speed driving will not be tolerated. Please maintain a moderate speed and be safe. This is a "friendly" non-contact event. Anyone driving aggressively or attempting to intimidate another driver or comes close to contacting another vehicle or who drives irresponsibly or who fails to obey an Official or an Instructor will be black flagged. Please be courteous at all times, wait for passing zones and do not intimidate slower drivers. Fueling cars in the paddock is not allowed. Move your vehicle to the concrete pad adjacent to the fuel tanks to fill your car with fuel. No smoking is allowed anywhere near the concrete fueling pad. Trash containers are provided and littering will not be tolerated. This includes cigarette butts. Any oil, fuel or coolant spills must be immediately brought to the attention of track officials and cleaned up with absorbant material. Speed limit in the paddock is 5 miles per hour (walking speed). Observe the Flagmen at all times to look for flags. Anyone ignoring a flagman's flag or hitting the gravel more than once during the day will be black flagged. Anyone going entirely off track or spinning their car will be black flagged. Anyone who receives a second black flag during the day will lose the rest of that session. A third black flag means you will not be allowed back on the track for the rest of the day. The track is ‘hot’ from 8am to 5pm but may be closed to all WCLM participants during lunch. A reminder – 8 hours bottle to throttle. The event organizers will prohibit anyone from participating (even if they have paid for this event) if it is felt that they would be a hazard to themselves or anyone else. Alcohol consumption is not allowed at the track by anyone, drivers or non-drivers alike until after 5pm. Anyone who does not respect the track rules will be asked to leave the racetrack. Passing requires a "point-by" hand signal and is allowed only in two passing zones between turns 7 and 8 and between turns 10 and 1 (see the track map). Passes may only be executed after the driver of the car in front signals a "point-by" which is an index finger point of the hand completely over the roof of the car pointing to the right. The car in front holds his line along the left side of the track and lifts off the gas completely. The car in front must do another point-by for every car behind him and must lift completely off the gas until all cars have passed. The car behind may not pass until the point-by is offered by the car in front, and the car behind may not pass unless it is safely within one of the two passing zones. Should the car in front fail to give a point-by to the car behind at the start of a passing zone, or should they fail to lift completely off the gas, they will receive a passing flag. Repeated failure to comply with the passing rules will result in a black flag. Please be aware that the car behind you may not wish to pass because he does not feel there is enough room left to pass, or because you are not in a passing zone, or for any number of other reasons. If the car behind chooses not to pass, he should signal you with a wave in order to decline your point-by. Drivers must always check their rearview mirrors when approaching a passing zone and yield to any car behind them, even though they are faster in the straights. Drivers should use a "closed fist" hand signal when entering the pits, when stopping for a red flag, when stopping for mechanical difficulties, or any other time you must make an emergency stop, or dramatically slow down on the track. Failure to properly execute this signal with an obvious "closed fist" can be easily misinterpreted as a "point-by" which can be disasterous. Please make this hand signal deliberate and obvious. In the rare event that you must stop on the track, move off to the side but stay on the asphalt. When driving a disabled car slowly back to the pits, stay on the asphalt but off the "line", and keep your fist high in the air to signal approaching drivers that they may pass. Give a "thumbs-up" hand signal and remain in your car after an off-track incident to indicate you are OK. Failure to give a clear and obvious "thumbs-up" signal will indicate that you are NOT OK, and an ambulance will be dispatched. If you are able to do so safely, exercise extreme caution when returning onto the track, and then pull directly into the hot pits to speak with an official. Next pull into the paddock to check for gravel in your wheels, brakes and tires and to check for damage to your wheels and tires. If you are unable to safely return to the track after an incident, remain in your car until after your run group session has finished. A tow truck will then be dispatched. Do not exit your car unless your car is on fire. The safest place for you while on the racetrack is inside the confines of your car.
A white flag means an ambulance or tow truck is on the course. A furled black flag black pointed at you is a warning. You do not need to come in. A yellow flag waved very fast indicates a potentially dangerous situation ahead. Otherwise a yellow flag means caution and no passing. It does not always mean to slow down. Two yellow flags shown together means full course yellow and that you must wait for a green flag to resume passing. Otherwise you can begin to pass again after you see a flag station without a yellow flag, but only in a designated passing zone. The West Coast Lotus group (WCL) will be running the 2.2 Mile Track with the Lotus Challenge Series (LCS). The schedule is subject to change: 6:00 WCL Registration, Self-Tech Inspection and Setup
